Deloitte’s 15th annual edition of the Football Money League, published earlier this month, has highlighted the desperate need for Italian clubs to address their stadium issues.

According to Deloitte, the top 20 clubs generated combined revenues of over €4.4billion in 2010/11, the focus of the latest edition, a 3% increase on the previous year.

As in the previous survey, all top 20 revenue-generating clubs belong to the five major European leagues; Real Madrid leading the standings with a turnover of more than €438.6 million.

However, while the report highlights the impressive performance of European clubs, as a collective, it also demonstrates the significant gulf between Italian football and the rest of the Europe in terms of matchday revenues.

For example, AC Milan, the leading Italian club in the Money League ranked by Deloitte at #7, has the lowest matchday revenue of any club in the Money League top ten.

The below comparison of the four strongest Italian teams (AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and AS Roma – all in the Top Deloitte’s 20) and four of the English Premier League (Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool) further highlights the problem – both Manchester United and Arsenal boast higher matchday revenues than Italy’s top four clubs combined:

Premier League
Manchester United ( € 122,4m )
Arsenal ( € 114,7m )
Chelsea ( € 82,1m )
Liverpool ( € 52,4m )

Top 4 Italian clubs:
Inter ( € 38,6 )
AC Milan ( € 31,3)
AS Roma ( € 19 )
Juventus ( € 16,9)

There are signs of change, however. Last September, Juventus FC became the first, and only, Serie A club to play in its own stadium, following the opening of the new Juventus Stadium.

And, with the FIGC’s Stadium Manager programme serving to help develop the knowledge of key executives in the sector, and renaissance of the Italian stadium sector may well be on the way…

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) – the governing body of football in Italy – is backing TheStadiumBusiness Summit 2012.

Founded in 1898, the FIGC organises the Italian football league, Coppa Italia, Italian national football team, and the Italian women’s national football team. A founding member of UEFA and a member of FIFA, the Federation is based in Rome, with its technical department in Coverciano (Florence).

For the past year, under the auspices of the FIGC – and in partnership with key local partner Studio Ghiretti – Xperiology (organiser of TheStadiumBusiness Summit) has delivered a series of training sessions as part of a national Stadium Manager development programme.

Led by FIGC President Giancarlo Abete (pictured), and under the direction of Dr. Michele Uva, head of FIGC’s Development Department, Italy’s football federation is determined to rebuild the country’s underperforming (and underwhelming) football infrastructure.

The Stadium Manager training programme has brought together international experts with their Italian counterparts to help ‘re-launch’ Italy’s football stadium sector.

• See La ripartenza! Partnering for FIGC’s renaissance in Italian football stadiums

And now the FIGC has offered it ‘patronage’ to TheStadiumBusiness Summit, with a high-level delegation from the Federation set to be in attendance in Turin this May.

“We are delighted that the FIGC have agreed to support the Summit,” said Ian Nuttall, founder of TheStadiumBusiness Summit.

“The Stadium Manager workshops that we’ve delivered alongside Studio Ghiretti have been a tremendous success.

“We must applaud President Abete, Michele Uva and other key executives at FIGC for their vision and efforts to initiate ‘la ripartenza’ for Italian football. It is an honour to be part of this vital process, and we look forward to welcoming our Italian friends to the industry’s definitive stadium meeting this May!”

TheStadiumBusiness Summit will form part of Session VI of the Stadium Manager development programme; guaranteeing that representatives of leading Italian football clubs from Serie A and Serie B will be in attendance in Turin.

Delegates at TheStadiumBusiness Summit 2012 in Turin will be treated to an exclusive update on one of Russia’s largest sports infrastructure investment projects, this May: Moscow’s VTB Arena Park.

Currently under design by MANICA Architecture (Premier Partner to TheStadiumBusiness Summit), the project includes the renovation of the existing Dynamo Moscow stadium, as well as its surrounding historic park; a groundbreaking $1.5 billion redevelopment built with the intention of becoming one of the landmark sites for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The completed site will host a 33,000-seat stadium (expandable to 45,000-seats for FIFA 2018 World Cup matches) and a 12,000-seat indoor multi-use arena, as well as a multitude of cultural, retail, and entertainment facilities. Construction on the project commenced earlier this month, with the new venue expected to open in early 2016.

And delegates at TheStadiumBusiness Summit 2012 will be given an exclusive update on the stunning new stadium; which was originally previewed last year at TheStadiumBusiness Summit 2011, in Barcelona.

“It has been a challenging but incredibly effective design process over the last several months – during which time my team solidified the coordinated workings and technicalities of this highly complex building,” said David Manica, Principal of MANICA Arhictecture.

“We have now completed the advanced schematic design package, including all inter-disciplinary engineering, and look forward to working more closely with our local Russian partners, Speech Architects, in Moscow during the forthcoming phases of design and construction. MANICA will continue to work on the project through its completion in 2016, and is of course very pleased to see the much anticipated official groundbreaking in Moscow last month. Without any doubt, it will be a truly unique facility.”

“We are proud to welcome MANICA Architecture as a Premier Partner to TheStadiumBusiness Summit,” commented Ian Nuttall, founder of TheStadiumBusiness Summit.

“And we’re delighted that David will be on hand in Turin to offer an exclusive update on what is truly a landmark project; not just for Russian football, but for the global sports venue sector.”

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The new VTB Stadium & Arena includes the redevelopment of the existing Dynamo Moscow stadium and its surrounding historic park. The entire development of the VTB Stadium & Arena Park is thought to be one of the largest projects that will be developed in the Russian Federation in the coming years. It will be a host venue for Russia’s FIFA 2018 World Cup.

The groundbreaking design integrates two levels of commercial retail within the historic walls of the old stadium, and locates both the 45,000-capacity outdoor football stadium and the 12,000-capacity indoor multi-use arena together above the existing wall and new retail areas. This solution not only preserves the historic perimeter façade of the existing stadium but integrates the venues functionally and aesthetically into the new development.

To be financially self-sustaining, VTB Stadium & Arena Park will also host a multitude of cultural, retail, and entertainment facilities. The mix of sport and entertainment will create a profitable and vibrant destination 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The unique design allows the existing park to be completely preserved as a public, green area while the addition of a state-of-the-art 125,000m2 amateur and professional sport training facility, ensures that the VTB project will be the centerpiece of the development of all sport throughout the Russian Federation for decades to come.

Inaugurated in 2010, and held annually alongside TheStadiumBusiness Summit, TheStadiumBusiness Awards recognise leadership, innovation & achievement in the delivery, operation and management of sports facilities globally.

After the unprecedented success of the 2011 Awards – hosted by FC Barcelona at the world-famous Camp Nou stadium, Barcelona, Spain in June 2011 – executives from the global stadium sector are once again invited to enter their nominations ahead of the 2012 prize-giving.

In total, eighteen Awards will be presented at TheStadiumBusiness Awards 2012 Gala Evening, which will be held in Turin, Italy on 15 May 2012.

“We have once again had a tremendous response since nominations opened,” commented Ian Nuttall, Awards founder and chair of TheStadiumBusiness Awards judging panel. “It is terrific to see the industry embracing TheStadiumBusiness Awards, and we look forward to receiving many more entries in the coming weeks.

“The Awards were designed to drive awareness of the stadium, arena and sports venue sector, and the many successes that the industry generates around the world,” continued Nuttall.

“Sports venues entice, entertain and enthral billions of sports fans every year, and we hope that TheStadiumBusiness Awards will go some way to help recognising the achievements of the leading stadiums and sporting arenas, and their management teams.”

HOW TO ENTER

Any venue (stadium, arena, circuit, ballpark, sports ground), company, organisation, association, team, club or individual that has been involved in the stadium/sports venue sector between 1 January 2011 and 2 March 2012 is eligible to enter (or be nominated for) TheStadiumBusiness Awards 2012.

The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) on Tuesday fired the starting gun in the race to secure naming rights partners for London 2012’s Olympic Stadium, along with two other key Games facilities.

As reported by SportBusiness, the OPLC has launched a formal tender process for the £486 million centrepiece of this summer’s Games, along with the Aquatics Centre and the multi-use Copper Box which will host the handball tournament in July and August.

The Olympic Stadium will host the 2017 World Athletics Championships and the OPLC last week confirmed that it had received 16 registrations from parties interested in bidding to use the venue after the Games. The Aquatics Centre and the Copper Box are expected to serve over a million visitors a year when they re-open after the Games.

The venues and the Olympic Park will begin to re-open in 2013 after they have been converted to their legacy configuration. Olympic organisers have outlined that they expect the Park to attract 9.3 million visitors a year from 2016. Parties have until March 2 to register their interest in the sponsorship rights, before being invited to submit a proposal. The Legacy Company aims to appoint sponsors in May.

“This is a rare opportunity to become part of one of the most exciting new places in the world,” said Andrew Altman, chief executive of the Olympic Park Legacy Company. >> Article continues at SportBusiness.com >>
