SKIDATA is qualified for the Football World Cup 2014: The technology company from Salzburg is going to equip the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro – The world’s biggest stadium is the venue for the upcoming Football World Cup Finals.

SKIDATA, one of the global leading providers of access management, is going to ensure the most modern access technology in the Maracana Stadium. The sporting and concert event venue, which is located in the Brazilian metropolis Rio de Janeiro, was opened in 1950. Currently it is being rebuilt and modernized for the upcoming Football World Cup 2014 and the Summer Olympics 2016.

SKIDATA will be exhibiting at TheStadiumBusiness Summit 2013 – Pod 127

Maracana Stadium

SKIDATA will play another big part in a major football event. Ever since the European Football Championship in Portugal in 2004 and the World Football Championship in Germany in 2006, at least 50% of these event venues have been relying on SKIDATA access systems.

Approximately 670,000 of the 1.2 million visitors at the European Championship 2012, in Poland and the Ukraine, passed the turnstiles of the access expert.

Besides the Football World Cup, the Maracana Stadium is also meant to be the central Olympic stadium for the Summer Olympics 2016 and the Summer Paralympics 2016. The company are looking forward to the tough task ahead:

“We are very happy to equip this very prestigious project in Brazil with the latest access technology as well as with the corresponding software. Access management in Maracana Stadium, the biggest stadium in the world, is especially complex – in terms of technology and organisation. It gives SKIDATA the opportunity to demonstrate its expertise and know-how once again.”

Besides the Maracana Stadium, SKIDATA is also responsible for the access solution for some other exciting and prestigious stadiums like: Westpac Stadium (Wellington, New Zealand), Juventus Football Club (Turin, Italy) or the Allianz Arena (Munich, Germany).

Before the 2,226-capacity Gallagher Stadium opened at the start of the 2012–2013 season, Isthmian League side Maidstone United FC were without a stadium of their own for more than two decades.

Planning permission had been granted some 8 years previously but, as we know, the stadium-build journey takes a long time – especially if you want to build on land owned by the Ministry of Defence.

Maidstone United was the first English team to build a stadium with 3G artificial turf for three key reasons:

eliminate the risk of match postponements;

provide secondary income and community use from pitch hire;

provide pitch usage for all the club’s youth and community teams.

Maidstone United now heads up a group of professional clubs looking to promote the merits of 3G surfaces called ’3G4US’.

About the speaker:

Oliver Ash is a 55-year-old Economics graduate from St. Andrews University and a Chartered Surveyor. He is co-owner of Maidstone United Football Club and Director and shareholder of CA Brive, a French Second Division Rugby Club and former Heineken Cup winner. He is also Director and shareholder of Goodform, a sports marketing and CRM specialist company.

Over the last 10 years he has been involved in several stadium projects as consultant or developer, including the new Gallagher Stadium in Maidstone, the extension of the Stade Amédée Domenech in Brive and a proposed redevelopment of the historic Stade Colombes near Paris, which staged the 1924 Olympic Games and was used for the film Chariots of Fire.

Oliver and his family also own the Richmond Group, a European property investment company. Richmond was set up in 1999 and has undertaken 250,000m² of commercial investments and developments. The latest project is a 30,000m² shopping centre, Alpha Park, near Versailles, which has just opened.

Milton Keynes Dons FC was launched in 2004 and we are delighted to announce that Pete Winkelman, Chairman, MK Dons and Managing Director, StadiumMK will be joining TheStadiumBusiness Summit.

For the first three years Milton Keynes Dons FC played its home games on a temporary hockey field before moving into its new home StadiumMK opened by the Queen in 2007 with an initial capacity of 22,000.

The stadium project – which nears completion this year with the addition of a further 8,500 seats – incorporates world- class stadium design to UEFA Elite standards, an integrated hotel, conference facilities and a 5,000 capacity concert arena and event space (opening in December).

Our guest speaker Pete Winkelman will be drawing on a decade of development challenges and outline the key factors for a sustainable sports business in a new market.

Our panel discussion featuring Dr. Christian Deuringer, Global Brand Management, Allianz SE, Germany charts the evolution of stadium and arena naming rights and explores the future direction of these special mass-sponsorship relationships.

Since its launch in 2010, TheStadiumBusiness Summit has focused on the larger stadiums and higher profile teams.

However, our delegates tell us that there is a real desire to address the information needs – and to showcase the successes – of small and medium-sized stadium businesses. After all, there is as much (perhaps even more?) innovation in these smaller markets.

This is the reason behind the addition of our Small Market Economics (SME13)Workshop alongside the 2013 edition of the Summit in Manchester.

On 7th June (parallel to the main Summit) the SME13 workshop brings together leading executives who are at the forefront of stadium success – both planned and existing – in smaller markets.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

The one-day workshop (on Friday 7th June) includes six stadium case studies – going in-depth into the P&L, matchday and non-matchday business plans – with lots of time for Q&A and debate.

View the full Workshop Schedule here (PDF, 1.3Mb)

Please email us if you would like to reserve a place for you and your colleagues.

If you are in the (smaller) stadium business, we invite you to join us for a day of invaluable insights, business lessons and new thinking from the “boutique” stadium sector. See you in Manchester!

Manchester City FC is courting the headlines with news that the club’s owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan has entered “final negotiations” to acquire Major League Soccer’s (MLS) New York expansion franchise – according to the New York Times.

The newspaper, citing two people with knowledge of the talks, reported that Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group is prepared to pay a US$100 million franchise fee for the League’s 20th team.

Sport Business magazine adds: The fee would more than double the $40 million paid for the Montreal Impact, which became the 19th MLS franchise when it began play last year. The League is said to want to make the announcement before May 25, when Manchester City is scheduled to play a friendly game at Yankee Stadium against Chelsea.

A NEW, NEW YORK STADIUM

MLS has previously outlined its hope that a 20th team will begin play in 2016 at a new stadium at a 10-acre site in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park – creating a rivalry with the New York Red Bulls. After months of public hearings, applications and discussions, the New York Times states a deal for the privately financed $340 million stadium, which would hold 25,000 spectators and could be expanded to 35,000, may be completed in several weeks.

Speaking last week, MLS commissioner Don Garber said he hoped to make an announcement regarding the stadium and the team in four to six weeks’ time – writes Sport Business.
