Sports stars including Jamie Carragher, Tony Bellew and Katarina Johnson-Thompson are among those publicly backing Liverpool’s recent bid to be the host city for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Liverpool Mayor, Joe Anderson, launched the campaign last night and was quoted as saying: “Liverpool is an ambitious city and I believe we have an enormous amount to offer when it comes to hosting an event of this scale which would be an incredibly important catalyst for regeneration, investment and raising the profile of sport”.
A project Director wil be appointed shortly to oversee the bidding process and a consultancy firm will carry out feasibility studies to ensure the city’s infrastructure matches up to the Commonwealth Games Federation requirements.
The intention to bid even has the support of neighbouring town and longstanding sporting-rivals Manchester.
Sir Richard Leese said: “Manchester and Liverpool might have a long tradition of sporting rivalry but Liverpool’s bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games has Manchester’s wholehearted support”.
It’s also thought that the possibility of hosting the Commonwealth Games might be advantageous for Everton’s well-documented search for a new stadium within the city. Anderson last month announced that he was confident Everton will see a new stadium within two years. Perhaps a new stadium (with athletics track) would boost the bid?
The ultimate decision as to who will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games will be confirmed by the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in September 2019.
